When can a COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test be used?

Rapid antigen tests are best used when the patient is tested in the early phase of infection, particularly when viral load is assumed to be at it’s highest. They are also of diagnostic use to individuals who have had a known exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

What is the CDCs recommendations?

The CDC defines antigen tests as a diagnostic test meaning that if a patient has a positive result on a COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test, they are considered positive for SARS-CoV-2 and results must be reported to the proper authorities. This is unlike the COVID-19 Antibody Tests. Please refer to the CDC website for more information.

How long does it take to get results from Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Tests?

These lateral flow technology tests are similar to pregnancy test or a rapid strep test with results available in a little as 3 minutes. Most tests provide results in 15 minutes.

Is this test for home use?

No, COVID-19 antigen tests are only available in a doctor’s office or the hospital.
